Rank: Lieutenant Commander Duty: Security/Tactical officer Race: Vulcan |
Lieutenant Commander Tuvok's logic and experience is treasured by Captain Janeway on U.S.S. Voyager's long journey. Janeway's tactical officer for many year, the Vulcan was on an undercover mission to infiltrate Chakotay's renegade Maquis ship when he was swept along with the Maquis into the Delta Quadrant. Reunited with Janeway, he became Voyager's tactical officer and head of security. Stranded on the other side of the galaxy, Tuvok misses his family, but his counsel and dedication serves Janeway well. Tuvok remains somewhat isolated but has slowly come to a new appreciation for humans and other emotional species, as he realizes his logical standards are not always the best means of dealing with others.
Tuvok entered Starfleet Academy at his parents' insistence. Dealing with other species was not easy for Tuvok, who resigned his commission after serving as a junior science officer aboard U.S.S. Excelsior under Captain Sulu. He returned to Vulcan, immersing himself in the Kolinahr discipline to purge all emotion, but abandoned this when he underwent pon farr, the Vulcan mating time, and married T'Pel. Raising his children helped Tuvok understand his own parents' decision to send him to the Academy, and he returned to Starfleet after an abscence of five decades.
Tuvok is unwavering in his adherance to logic, but his logic has occasionally put him in jeopardy. When the Sikarians refuse to give Janeway technology that could transport the crew home, Tuvok risks court-martial to steal the technology without Janeway's knowledge, hoping to spare her the choice of violating the Prime Directive in order to get the crew home. Tuvok realizes that although his logic may be correct, it is not always right to apply it. Later, Tuvok's drive to find a logical motive behind a murder committed by Ensign Suder leads him to rashly initiate a dangerous mind-meld with the killer.
Janeway is the closest thing to family Tuvok has aboard Voyager. He was very close to his student and protege Kes, training her to control her mental powers. He is greatly respected and admired by the entire crew, especially Ensign Harry Kim and Neelix, who show Tuvok that he is often dismissive of Neelix's abilities and the emotions of his human crewmates, and lead him to become more understanding in his association with other races.
