Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres

Rank: Lieutenant

Duty: Chief Engineer

Race: Half Human, Half Klingon

"If anyone is going to smash your arrogant little face in, I am."

Volatile and passionate, the half-Human, half-Klingon B'Elanna Torres has forever been conflicted. Unable to accept the structure of Starfleet Academy, she dropped out, only to immediately join an anti-Cardassian rebel faction, the Maquis. While on a mission for the Maquis, B'Elanna and others on her ship were brought into the Delta Quadrant, where they were forced to beam aboard the Federation starship U.S.S. Voyager to survive. Now, trapped 70,000 light years from home, B'Elanna has become a valued member of the Voyager crew as its Chief Engineer. She has also learned that she must accept her discordant heritage, and that she can mold her passion to a new form...love.

After her father abandoned his family on the Federation colony on Kessik IV, B'Elanna was taken to the Klingon Homeworld of Qo'noS by her Klingon mother. The young girl grew up strong-willed and independent, but her human side caused conflicts. When B'Elanna enrolled in Starfleet Academy, she lasted into her second term before the suppression of her Klingon side caused her to have problems with fellow classmates and teachers. She left the Academy and joined the Maquis, a group of rogue Federation officers who chose to fight the Cardassian threat on their own. It was there that she came under the command of Maquis leader Chakotay.

In 2371, Chakotay's Maquis ship was pursued throught the Badlands by the Federation starship Voyager, when a displacement wave deposited both ships in the Delta Quadrant. The Maquis crew was brought aboard Voyager from their crippled ship, and B'Elanna, like the other Maquis, has had to learn to work alongside the Federation crewmembers. Captain Janeway, realizing B'Elanna's genius in engineering, gives her the duties of Chief Engineer, over the objections of Lieutenant Carey. B'Elanna has since proven herself a valuable addition to the crew.

B'Elanna is forced to deal with the opposing parts of her heritage when a Vidiian scientist splits her human and Klingon sides into two separate bodies. The internal struggle between her intellect and her emotions becomes a desperate battle for survival, in which the Klingon and Human must work together, to find a way to reintegrate into one body. Recently, Lieutenant Torres has acknowledged her attraction to fellow crewmember Tom Paris, and the two have begun a romance.

Interesting Facts

As a small child, B'Elanna lived with her parents on Kessik IV. Her father abandoned them when B'Elanna was five. Her mother then relocated them to the Klingon homeworld, Qo'noS.

B'Elanna was a member of the decathalon team at Starfleet Academy.

While with the Maquis, B'Elanna was a close friend of engineering officer Seska, not suspecting that the Bajoran-featured woman was secretly a Cardassian agent who had been surgically altered.

Vorik, an Vulcan crew member of Voyager, once used a mind-meld to force B'Elanna to go through the Pon farr mating ritual with him. She overcame Vorik and the Pon farr urge by beating Vorik in ritual combat.

B'Elanna once asked Chakotay to help her find her animal spirit guide, but when she found it, she tried to kill it.
