Lieutenant Tom Paris

Rank: Lieutenant

Duty: Helmsman

Race: Human

"I'm the best pilot you could have."

Becoming stranded in the Delta Quadrant, 70,000 light years from home, could be the best thing to ever happen to Tom Paris. An expert pilot and son of an admiral, Paris was kicked out of Starfleet for covering up his responsibility for the deaths of three officers in a careless accident. He briefly joined the renegade Maquis, but was captured and imprisioned until he was recruited by Captain Kathryn Janeway of the U.S.S. Voyager to help locate a lost Maquis ship. When Voyager is catapulted to the Delta Quadrant, Janeway grants Paris a field commission to lieutenant and assigns him to the flight controller's station. Recognizing his chance for redemption and eager to justify Janeway's faith in him, Paris continues to try to rise above his past as he pilots the starship on its long journey home.

Paris believes he has a lot to prove to himself and his crewmates, and works hard to earn their trust and respect. Both Starfleet and Maquis officers saw him as a coward and a mercenary who could not be relied upon. But over time, Paris has become one of the most trusted officers on board. Commander Chakotay has referred to Paris as Janeway's "personal reclamation project", and the lieutenant has no intention on going back to the person he was.

That initial distrust, ironically, makes Paris the perfect officer to use in a ruse devised by Janeway to uncover a spy aboard Voyager who is feeding information to the crew's enemies, the Kazon. Paris feigns a pattern of insubordination and finally resigns his Starfleet commission, all in order to infiltrate the Kazon as a double agent. The mission goes a long way toward raising his crewmates' opinion of him. Paris also becomes the first human to cross the warp 10 threshold and pilot a shuttle at transwarp speed, a feat of great historical significance.

Paris created the holodeck program of Chez Sandrine, a French bistro from his Academy days, which has proved highly popular with the crew. Tom maintains a healthy eye for the ladies, and tries to encourage his best friend, Ensign Harry Kim, to do the same. Paris has more recently expressed romantic feelings towards Lieutenant B'Elanna Torres.
