Fresh out of Starfleet Academy, Ensign Harry Kim believed his first mission aboard U.S.S. Voyager would be a short journey into the galactic storm field known as the Badlands to track down members of the Maquis, renegade Starfleet officers. After Voyager is catapulted 70,000 light years away into the Delta Quadrant, that mission turns into a journey home that could last the rest of Harry's life. He distinguishes himself quickly, becoming one of Captain Janeway's most trusted and valued crew members. Harry wanted to join Starfleet all his life, but being cut off from his family has made his tour on Voyager a lonely one. Still, he has bravely faced many life-and-death struggles aboard the starship, not all of which he has survived.
Harry excelled at Starfleet Academy, editing the Academy newspaper for a year and sparking debate on the first activites of the Maquis. He throws himself into his work aboard Voyager to cover his intense feelings of loss of his old life, but is helped by his close friendship with Lieutenant Tom Paris and with Captain Janeway, who feels very protective of Harry.
Harry frequently bears the brunt of the dangers Voyager faces. After being accidentally transported to the Ktarian homeworld in another dimension, he has to undergo the Ktarian "death ritual" and actually die in order to be transported back to Voyager and revived. He and Paris are thrown into a satellite prison where Harry is forced to find out the lengths he will go in order to survive. Worst of all, he has to endure unimaginable physical and mental agony when he is attacked and infected by a member of Species 8472.
Harry Kim died on Stardate 49548.7. When Voyager hit a spacial rift, a duplicate of the ship was created in a parallel dimension. The original ship was severely damaged and Harry was sucked out into space while trying to repair a hull breach. When the Vidiians board the duplicate ship, the duplicate Harry is sent over to the original ship before its duplicate self-destructs. The Harry now aboard Voyager is identical to the original Harry, and still maintains the original's confidence that he and his shipmates will one day get home.
