Rank: Unofficial Duty: Engineering Specialist Race: Human |
Captain Kathryn Janeway had never expected to meet an adversary more dangerous that the Borg, nor that one of them -- Seven of Nine -- would become a trusted member of her crew. Then the Federation starship U.S.S. Voyager encounters Species 8472, warlike, mantis-like beings who threaten the Borg collective's very existence. Desperate, the Borg accept Janeway's bold proposal -- she will help the Borg defeat Species 8472 in exchange for Voyager's safe passage through Borg space. Seven of Nine, a Borg drone who was once human, comes aboard Voyager to speak on behalf of the collective. After successfully evading Species 8472 -- and a failed hijacking attempt by the Borg -- Voyager resumes her journey home to the Alpha Quadrant, with Seven of Nine still aboard. For the first time in her life, Seven finds herself cut off from the collective which raised her. Now she must learn how to live among humans, and to cope with the puzzle of her re-emerging humanity.
The Hansens were 24th-century humans from Earth, and they shared a rather unconventional point of view. The married couple worked together as scientists, but neither of them wanted anything to do with Starfleet or the Federation. They conducted their research and lived aboard their small starship, the Raven, which eventually took them beyond the bounds of known space. Accompanied by their young daughter, Annika, the Hansens led a happy life, one small family exploring the vast universe together. The Raven was last seen in the early 2350s, leaving the Alpha Quadrant's remote Omega Sector on a heading for the Delta Quadrant.
Then, in about 2354, the Borg came. Several drones beamed aboard the Raven, dragged Annika's parents away, and assimilated the young girl into the collective. In time, Annika forgot her parents, the Raven, Earth, and even her own humanity. The Borg raised Annika Hansen to adulthood, defining her life and giving her purpose as the seventh Borg drone in a unit composed of nine. And so she remained, until the Borg collective became embroiled in its war against Species 8472, and struck the bargain with Captain Janeway which ensured the survival of the Borg collective and of Voyager.
When she takes up residence aboard Voyager, Seven of Nine at first finds the individuality which humanity prizes so highly to be a frightening ordeal; she is horrified to be cut off from the comforting voices of the collective, which had guided her every waking thought for as long as she can remember. But her association with members of her own species has already begun to rekindle her spark of individuality -- as well as long-supressed memories of the horror of her assimilation by the Borg nearly two decades ago.
Interesting Facts
Annika Hansen and her parents were among the first humans ever assimilated by the Borg. She is one of only a handful of people ever to be restored from Borg assimilation.
Seven of Nine's complete Borg designation is "Seven of Nine, tertiary adjunct of unimatrix zero one".
Seven of Nine has a thorough knowledge of Borg transwarp technology. However, a basic incompatibility between Federation and Borg technology has so far made it impossible for her to open a transwarp conduit to accelerate Voyager's return to the Alpha Quadrant.
Seven of Nine's uniform incorporates dermal regeneration equipment, similar to the wraps used to rehabilitate burn victims. This is to speed Seven's healing after the removal of most of her Borg implants.
